Here is guidance for handling some frequently seen dental emergencies.
In the case of a toothache...
Start by rinsing your mouth with warm water to gently clean around the tooth, then floss carefully to clear away any particles that may be caught in the surrounding tissue. Should the pain persist, or if the area near the affected tooth feels warm to the touch, please call our office so we can schedule an appointment for you.
If a lip, gum, cheek, or tongue gets cut...
Reduce swelling with an ice pack, and use a clean cloth or sterile gauze to apply pressure until any bleeding stops. Should the bleeding not subside, please contact your physician or head to your local emergency room.
If a baby tooth gets knocked out...

If a permanent tooth gets knocked out...
Call our office immediately, and follow these steps. First, avoid touching the tooth root and instead hold the tooth by its crown, rinsing it gently with water. Second, try to place the tooth back into its socket as soon as you can, biting down on clean gauze to keep it steady. Third, if the tooth will not go back into the socket, place it in a small container of milk or saliva and bring it along to your appointment.
If a tooth gets chipped or broken...
Rinse the area gently with lukewarm water, and place a cold compress against the face to help bring any swelling down. If you are able to find the broken piece of tooth, place it in milk and bring it along when you come to the office. Should more than half of the tooth be broken off, please call us right away.
