Denture options can be fixed or removable, partial or complete, and may or may not involve implants
Dentures are designed to replace several missing teeth at once. A fixed denture is anchored with implants, whereas a removable denture may or may not use implants for added stability.
Conventional Denture Options
Full Dentures for Patients Missing All Their Teeth
(For Patients Missing All Teeth in the Upper or Lower Arch)
These removable dentures are not attached to implants. Each one features a custom acrylic base, shaped in a dental laboratory to resemble natural gum tissue, that rests over the gums to keep the denture positioned. A full denture is typically fitted once every tooth in the upper and/or lower jaw has been extracted and the gum tissue has had time to heal. Adhesive or denture paste can help keep the appliance secure, and because these dentures are removable, they can be taken out for cleaning.
Partial Dentures for Patients Missing Several Teeth in One Arch
When some natural teeth remain in an arch, a removable partial denture can replace the missing teeth in that arch. In these cases, the acrylic base typically includes small metal clasps that wrap around the remaining teeth to help hold it in place, and partial dentures can also be secured using crowns positioned on either side of the appliance. Because they are removable, partial dentures can be taken out for cleaning when not in use.
Implant-Retained Denture Options
Dental implants can anchor a denture more securely, which may allow for a smaller base and can reduce shifting while the appliance is in use. Implants may be used to support full dentures, partial dentures, fixed dentures, and removable dentures alike.
