Caring for Your Smile After Scaling and Root Planing

  • During the first 24 hours after your appointment, your teeth may feel sensitive to both cold and heat.
  • Wait until all numbness from the anesthesia has completely faded before eating or drinking anything hot.
  • Stay away from intense workouts and very hot or spicy meals for the first day following treatment.
  • Skip alcohol and tobacco use for a minimum of 48 hours after your procedure.
  • A small amount of bleeding after a deep cleaning is expected, though you should contact our office if the bleeding becomes heavy.
  • Ibuprofen or acetaminophen may be taken as needed, following either the package directions or the guidance given to you by your doctor.
  • Rinsing with warm salt water, about one teaspoon dissolved in an eight ounce glass of water, up to three times daily can ease discomfort.
  • Use a gentle touch when brushing and flossing after your deep cleaning, and return to your normal routine once any soreness subsides.
  • Be sure to follow any additional guidance our team shared with you at your appointment.
  • Take all prescribed medications exactly as directed.
