Caring for Your New Denture or Partial After Delivery

  • It is common for a denture or partial to need several adjustment visits before it feels comfortable.
  • Reading out loud for a short time each day can help you get used to wearing your new denture.
  • Leave your denture out overnight, or for a minimum of six hours during the day, so your mouth and gums have time to rest.
  • Each night, take your denture out, clean it, and store it in a clean container filled with denture cleaning solution.
  • Bits of food can become trapped beneath a denture and lead to irritation or sore spots, so after taking your denture out, gently brush your tongue, your gums, and the roof of your mouth.
  • Feeling some soreness for the first few days after receiving your finished denture or partial is normal.

Ongoing Care

  • Brush your teeth and the surrounding gum tissue after every meal and snack, and floss at least once a day before bed. If you wear a full denture, cleaning it daily is especially important.
  • Rinsing your mouth with water or a mouthwash afterward helps wash away any remaining particles that brushing and flossing may have missed.
  • Schedule a visit to our office at least once a year so our doctor can check and adjust your denture or partial. An ill-fitting denture or partial that isn’t properly cared for and adjusted can lead to bone loss in the jaw and oral disease.
  • Contact our office if you notice ongoing pain or discomfort, or if you have any concerns about your denture or partial.
